While we’re on the subject of support issues, we recently had a few reports of an issue with the Easy Media Creator 7 software we install on all StarWitness machines.
The “Create a New DVD” option from the main menu launches a separate application known as DVD Builder, version 7. This is the software that allows you to burn a DVD movie that's viewable on a stand-alone DVD player, a process known as "authoring."
According to the Roxio knowledge base, DVD Builder 7 is incompatible with Internet Explorer 7 (or later). Thankfully, the portion of the software for burning data-only, non-video CDs and DVDs is unaffected by the issue. See the following link for details:
http://kb.roxio.com/search.aspx?URL=/content/kb/Creator/000017CR&PARAMS=
The issue can be corrected by uninstalling Internet Explorer 7 under Add/Remove Programs, which will revert your browser to IE6.
Should you decide to, you could also upgrade to a later version of Roxio’s software, which does not have this issue, but the upgrade is not free. You are also welcome to find an alternative software to meet your DVD burning needs, but since Roxio is what we install, it is what we at StarWitness tech support are familiar with, and it is unlikely we’d be able to assist you with the use of another product.
At this point, you might be asking yourself, “Why don’t they just install a later version of Roxio?” which is an excellent question to which I have three answers:
1) The version we install comes free with the DVD burners we purchase for the systems.
2) Roxio Easy Media Creator version 8 and later do not come with DVD authoring functionality as a standard option: an upgrade must be purchased on a per-system basis.
3) The free software helps us keep the cost down when you purchase a system, plus you get extra functionality that benefits you more as a user.
As it stands, it is unlikely we’ll be upgrading beyond Easy Media Creator 7 while we remain on the Windows XP platform, which we will continue to develop for through at least Q1 2010 if not longer.
(We are currently testing to ensure Windows 7 compatibility in our products, but that’s another subject for a later post.) |
